Doug Christy, our Executive Management Coach, graduated from Penn State University with a BS in Civil Engineering. Upon graduation, he quickly discovered during his first position with a major railroad that people, not engineering, was his passion. He was the first promoted supervisor out of his class of 24 engineers, and quickly moved up the ranks during his 20 year career with CSX Corporation (11 promotions during this time). A few of his major accomplishments during this period include:

  • Safety - Because of his performance in turning the worst safety record on his territory to the best within 1 year as a 24 year old, was selected to represent the entire division consisting of over 1000 employees.
  • Productivity - Established maintenance productivity records, along with rail car switching records, within first year as supervisor/manager leading those two functional departments.
  • Labor Relations - With the experience gained in being the liaison between management and labor for 12 separate labor agreements, he put that to good use as manager of the nation's largest intermodal terminal. He authored, negotiated and implemented the labor agreement that stands today and is used as the template throughout the nation.
  • Profitability - Developed and implemented one of the industry's first rail-based domestic container programs (to compete against truck) that was accountable for 50% of his corporation's profit on only 3% of their business volume during only its second year. He was awarded the corporate "Home Run of the Year" award by CEO John Snow (former Treasury Secretary under Bush).
  • R & D - Led a diverse cross-functional intercompany team that completed the engineering, construction and ultimately took to market a $30 million high tech intermodal train service that had been in development for 10 years.

His 20 years at CSX served as a tremendous venue for gaining critical experience for his next decade of executive leadership and business ownership in both the public and private sector.

  • President/CEO - During his 3 years, he led a 500 mile regional railroad through Iowa and Illinois with over $30 million revenue and 200 employees/contractors to 2 of its most profitable 3 years since its 15 year existence.
  • President/Managing Member - Restructured and resumed operation on a 300 mile railroad on California's northwest coast that had not operated for nearly 4 years due to severe storm damage, lack of public funding, and violation of state and federal regulations.
  • Executive Director - Led public agency that owned the California railroad and was instrumental in releasing over $8 million in funding to keep the railroad alive. This money bridge has enabled the state to recently release over $40 million in delayed funds to restore much needed commercial and excursion rail service.
  • President / Owner - Led the total restructuring of a $7 million railroad contracting company with over 100 employees in 7 states. Was able to successfully position the company for ultimate sell to strategic investor.

After the sale of his contracting company, Doug performed independent consulting for some close associates he worked with during his career. From developing a business plan, to establishing a marketing strategy, to assisting on engineering projects, he discovered he was drifting from his true compassion - people. It was during this time that he began researching the profession of business coaching and was introduced to the Professional Business Coaches Alliance (PBCA). He completed his training and licensing and now is an active member of the PBCA while living out his passion of coaching - something he had been preparing for his entire career.
